Question: Why are there Applications on File if there there are still Openings in a grade?
Answer: This situation is caused by sibling linking.  Parents have the option of linking two or more of their children who are applying simultaneously (example: I want my 2nd and 5th grader to both attend the magnet school).  However, at the time the first child's name is reached in the selection there is only an opening remaining in one of the two grades requested.  Because there is no opening for the second child the first child is also denied a seat.  Parents can prevent this situation by not linking the applications; however, they run the risk of having the children assigned to two different schools (one magnet, one not).

Q: Is there any point in applying if there are 0 openings in a grade?
A: Certainly.  The number of openings can change.  A few of the students who are accepted eventually decline the offer for one reason or another, such as moving out of town, thus opening seats for re-assignment.
